Saki United were left celebrating a unique feat on Wednesday evening after the Oke-ogun based side clinched thier first ever major trophy since 2013.The non-league side and Ibadan Football Association (IFA) League runners up booked a place at the final stage after beating Shooting Stars 5-4 at the semi final via penalty shoot-out following a two-all draw at the regulation time.
Oyo State Housing Corporation FC under the tutelage of Coach Sanusi Musiliu also defeated Oyo 'A' from Oyo town 3-2 on penalties after a one-all draw.
At the final match held yesterday at the Lekan Salami stadium, Adamasingba Ibadan. An early opener by Saki United winger Soliu Awhal in the first 12th minute gave the Oke Ogun side a deserved lead. Saka Saheed doubled the lead seven minutes later after a defensive error to end the first half 2-0 lead.
With 10 minutes of play at the second half, Housing Corporation FC reduced the tally after the centre referee awarded a penalty kick for a foul in the box. Omole Segun converted the spot kick.
Saki United, restored two-zero advantage for the second time from a goal mouth scramble by Saka Saheed, who grabbed a brace in his first state Aiteo Cup final.
Oyo State Housing Corporation FC were unfazed at this setback to their ambition to win the title as they continued to advance up field at every opportunity. At the 85th minute, they got the reward from Yussuf Adekunle to reduce the tally once again.
Efforts made by runners up of 2021 Governor Seyi Makinde Pre-season Tournament to send the game into extra time were fruitless as the centre referee pointed to the centre field for fulltime after five additional minutes.
Saki United, founded in year 2013 were crowned the champion of 2022 Oyo State Aiteo Cup after 3-2 win over Oyo State Housing Corporation FC.
At the third place match held earlier, Shooting Stars defeated Oyo 'A' 3-2 to secure a third position. A hat-trick by Emmanuel Lucky gave 3SC the victory while Hammed Oladele also grabbed a brace for Oyo 'A'. The last time Shooting Stars failed to reach the final was in 2008 when they lost to Oyo United at the semi final.
