Ogbomoso stood still on Monday afternoon as the 2025 edition of the Orumogege Football Competition commenced with grandeur at the Soun Stadium, celebrating the second anniversary of His Imperial Majesty, Oba Afolabi Ghandi Olaoye Orumogege III, the revered Soun of Ogbomoso.
Since ascending the throne of his forefathers, Oba Ghandi Olaoye has distinguished himself as a monarch deeply committed to the peace, unity, and development of Ogbomosoland. His visionary leadership, people-centered reign, and passion for youth empowerment have endeared him to sons and daughters of Ogbomoso at home and abroad, making his anniversary a festival of love, gratitude, and celebration.pp
The curtain-raiser between one of Ogbomoso’s oldest sides, Masifa United FC, and Jordan FC set the tone for the tournament, with Akinola Taofeek netting the only goal in the fourth minute to hand Masifa a narrow 1-0 victory. In the female category, BWFA English Queens of Ondo State defeated Model Queens of Kwara State 1-0, courtesy of Daniel Chatherine’s 18th-minute strike.
This year’s edition of the Orumogege Cup features more than 50 grassroots teams, with the historic introduction of a female category. The competition aims to promote unity, foster youth opportunities, and reinforce the enduring peace in Ogbomosoland.
Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, Mr. Amos Ado, while addressing newsmen, emphasized the spirit of sportsmanship and fair play. He disclosed that winners of the men’s and women’s categories will each receive a grand prize of ₦1 million, with ₦500,000 and ₦250,000 set aside for the second and third-placed teams respectively.
“Football is a universal language that preaches peace and unity, irrespective of tribe, faith, or political leaning. This tournament represents the values our Kabiyesi stands for—harmony, growth, and progress,” Ado noted.
The colourful event was graced by an array of dignitaries. At the forefront was His Imperial Majesty, Oba Afolabi Ghandi Olaoye Orumogege III, alongside Engr.
