The prestigious Ibadan Polo Club will this weekend play host to the highly anticipated Captain’s Cup, a tournament that heralds the beginning of the new polo season.
The two-day competition, scheduled for Saturday, September 6 and Sunday, September 7, 2025, will take place at the Ibadan Polo Club Grounds, Eleyele Road, Ibadan, with matches kicking off daily at 3:00 p.m.

In a statement signed by the Club Captain, Carl Alakija, the 2025 Captain’s Cup promises thrilling action with six teams vying for glory. The tournament will feature some of the country’s finest players, including Ahmed Umar of Ibadan Polo Club (+3), Dantala Ibrahim of Lagos Polo Club (+3), and Habib Buhari of Kano Polo Club (+2).
Alakija expressed confidence that fans will be treated to top-class polo artistry throughout the weekend. He further commended the sponsors—Durante Feed Limited, Pop Cola, Chicken Republic, Sooyah Bistro, among others—for their unwavering support in making the tournament a reality.
He noted that their contributions continue to elevate the standard of the game in Ibadan while also providing a platform for players and fans to bond in a festive atmosphere.
Importantly, organizers announced that entry into the tournament is absolutely free, a move aimed at encouraging the public to come in large numbers and experience the excitement of Nigeria’s “sport of kings.

The Oluyole Warriors, after their qualification to round 32 early this morning without kicking the ball, following the refusal of Zamfara United FC to show up for the round of 64 fixture at the Area 3 field, Abuja have been expelled from the oldest football competition in Nigeria. In a letter signed by the director for competition, Ruth David, on behalf of the Nigeria Football Federation General Secretary. Five players who were not registered with the Nigeria Football Federation for this year edition were fielded in today's match against Zamfara United.
