Crown FC General Manager, Olamide Ilupeju, popularly known as Ortega, has lauded the Nigeria National League (NNL) for abolishing the Super 8 promotion play-off, describing the decision as a welcome development that will bring fairness and clarity to the promotion process.
For years, promotion to the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) had been decided through the Super 8 tournament, where four teams from both the Northern and Southern Conferences competed for the elite league slots. However, at the NNL Annual General Meeting held on Tuesday in Kaduna, stakeholders unanimously agreed that group leaders from Conferences A, B, C, and D would now gain automatic promotion to the NPFL.
Speaking to OyoSportsNews after the meeting, Ilupeju commended the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, and the NNL Chairman, Chief George Aluo, for providing teams and representatives with the platform to make contributions that shaped the decision. He also praised the innovations introduced under their leadership, noting improvements in fair officiating, live match coverage, and overall league organization.
Looking ahead to the 2025/26 season, Ilupeju assured supporters that Crown FC, also known as the Ajilete Warriors, remain determined to make Oyo State proud despite losing some key players to NPFL clubs. He revealed that the team will embark on a closed camping exercise in preparation for the November 8 kickoff and will feature in a pre-season tournament in Ogun State to fine-tune their readiness.
With the scrapping of the Super 8, Crown FC’s fate now lies squarely in their hands, and Ilupeju believes the Ajilete Warriors have what it takes to rise to the challenge and compete strongly for promotion.
