The Bayo Adelabu Foundation has announced the commencement of a grassroots football competition that will involve all 33 local governments in Oyo State.
According to the Foundation, the championship is designed not only to promote sporting excellence but also to foster peace, unity, and social integration while encouraging young people to shun social vices through active participation in football. The tournament will be structured across five zones of the state—Ibadan, Oyo, Ibarapa, Ogbomoso, and Oke Ogun—with each zone producing qualifiers for the knockout stages. From Ibadan, six teams out of 11 local governments will advance to the round of 16. Ibarapa will produce two teams, Oke Ogun will contribute six teams from 10 local governments, while both Oyo and Ogbomoso zones will each present two teams after zonal eliminations.
To ensure proper hosting, zonal venues have been mapped out. Model Secondary School, Isokun will host matches in the Oyo zone; OSADEP football pitch and the NYSC Parade Ground have been designated for Oke Ogun; Obaseku High School will serve as the venue in Ibarapa; while Ogbomoso Grammar School will host the Ogbomoso zone games.Every participating local government will be provided with special, complete football jerseys. The competition also comes with attractive prizes: the overall winner will cart home ₦2 million, the runners-up ₦1 million, while the third and fourth-placed teams will receive ₦500,000 and ₦200,000 respectively as consolation prizes.
The official kick-off date will be announced after the conclusion of registration and documentation.
Commending the initiative, sports enthusiasts across the state have lauded the Adelabu Foundation for its commitment to grassroots sports development. They emphasized that beyond football, the tournament would serve as a unifying platform, strengthen peaceful coexistence, and provide an alternative path for the youth to channel their energy positively.
