The organisers of the Orumogege Football Competition have unveiled plans for the second edition of the tournament, dedicated to celebrating the second coronation anniversary of the Soun of Ogbomoso, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Afolabi Ghandi Olaoye Orumogege III.
At a press briefing in Ogbomoso yesterday, Chairman of the Organising Committee, Mr. Amos Adewale Ado, said the remarkable success of last year’s maiden edition inspired its continuation as an annual event. According to him, the competition has become a symbol of the unifying power of football, promoting youth development and strengthening community bonds.
“The Orumogege Football Competition is not just about the game; it is about discovering and nurturing talent, fostering unity, and shaping the future of Ogbomoso youth through sports,” Ado said. “Football teaches teamwork, discipline, resilience, and healthy living while building a sense of communal pride.”
The chairman also paid tribute to illustrious football figures from Ogbomoso, including the late Layi Olagbenro, Tunde Bamidele, and renowned coach Oladunni Oyekale, who featured in Nigeria’s U-17 and U-20 World Cup teams that won silver in 1987 and 1989.
This year’s edition will feature an expanded format with the introduction of a female category, marking another milestone for the competition. Matches are scheduled to kick off on Monday, September 8, 2025, at the Soun Stadium, Ogbomoso, with the grand finale to hold in December during the Cradle Carnival celebrations.
Dignitaries expected at the opening ceremony include the Acting Governor of Oyo State, Barrister Bayo Lawal; Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Edward Adebo Ogundoyin; Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Alhaja Wasilat Adegoke; lawmakers representing the Ogbomoso zone; local government chairmen; members of the House of Representatives; Senator Yunus Akíntúndé; and Senator Fatai Buhari.

Mr. Ado assured that adequate security, medical support, and fully equipped ambulances will be provided throughout the tournament to ensure the safety of players, officials, and fans.
