AFRICAN CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIP: OYO ATHLETES WIN FOUR MEDALS

Oyo state athletes Tawakalitu Yekeen, Rahmat Ibrahim, Adejoke Durogbade won silver medals while Elizabeth Ajibade won bronze medal in the elite women's 200m category at the just concluded 4th African Track Cycling Championships held at the Velodrome of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
The four-day event which ended on Sunday saw Team Nigeria finished with 17 medals, consisting of four Gold, seven Sliver and six Bronze.
Speaking on the athletes from Oyo state, Chairman, Oyo State Sports Council Hon Gbenga Adewusi commended the athletes for their impressive performances emphasizing that there is need for them to improve in the subsequent competitions.
Six athletes from Oyo state were involved in this year edition but Oluwatobi Akinola and Azeez Abass were unlucky to win medals for the Team Nigeria.
The final medal table saw South Africa cycling team finished first and won 42 medals, 20 Gold, 13 Silver and nine Bronze.
Egypt followed with 26 medals: eight Gold, eight Silver and 10 Bronze medal.
Algeria had 17 medals consisting of five Gold, five Sliver and seven Bronze.
Fifteen countries participated including Ghana, Benin Republic, Niger Republic, Cote’d Ivoire, Togo, Guinea, Burkina Faso, South Africa, Botswana, Burundi, Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria and Nigeria ( host).
The championship featured 11 events in Sprint, team sprint, Time trials (1km/ 500m), Keirin, team pursuit, Individual pursuit and Scratch.
