Super Falcons of Nigeria and FC Barcelona forward Asisat Oshoala has explained why she was left out of Head Coach Randy Waldrum's starting XI against the Matildas of Australia group B FIFA Women’s World Cup match.
Despite facing the co-host nation, Randy Waldrum opted to name Racing Louisville [Kentucky, USA] Uchenna Kanu and NY/NJ Gotham FC forward Ifeoma Onumonu against the Australia but the former Arsenal Ladies goal poacher has explained why she was benched.
Asisat Oshoala told newsmen shorltly after the 3-2 win: "I think I want to give kudos to my team-mates, everyone went out there to give their hearts out - no one knows what this team is made off but we only have to come to the field and show ourselves and the hearts we have. Like I said earlier, this team has a lot to offer and everyone and the world has seen that today. "
"To be honest with you, I'm not really feeling too well, and I'm not a selfish person, and this is why we have 23 players for the World Cup. If someone is not one hundred percent, then another person can step up, and as you can see, they all step up today. It doesn’t matter where I'm starting from. The most important thing is the result. "
For the record, Asisat Oshoala became the first Nigeria to score in three consecutive world Cup tournaments. He scored at the seventh FIFA Women's World Cup [Canada 2015] against Sweden and 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup host by France. She set a new record yesterday against the Matildas of Australia when she came off the bench to score the third goal in the 75th minute.
"In every tournament I go, I give everything, fight for my team-mates, fight for everything, fight for the badge because Nigeria is the best country in the world."
