GATEWAY GAMES: TEAM OYO DEPARTS IBADAN FOR OGUN, CHARGED TO GO FOR GOLD

A total of 320 athletes and officials in 101 sports left the city of Ibadan, for the 22nd National Sports Festival tagged ‘Gateway Games 2024’ which starts in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital on Sunday with an opening ceremony.
The athletes are taekwondoists, weightlifters, table tennis players, swimmers, judokas, boxers, gymnasts, golfers, volleyball players, and among others.
The athletes who have been training for the Gateway Games were in high spirits as they departed Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Adamasingba, Ibadan on Friday morning in convoy to Ogun state.
Team Oyo will be competing in 32 sporting events including, football, boxing, tennis, weightlifting, wrestling, handball, gymnastics, judo, chess, swimming, volleyball, Scrabble, Taekwondo, karate, golf, athletics and others.
The arrivals for the the 22nd National Sports Festival is scheduled for today at different game centres.
Speaking briefly to newsmen, Oyo State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Honourable Wasilat Adefemi Adegoke has urged athletes to give their best at the biennial event starting from May 16th to 30th, 2025.
Addressing the athletes before the team departed Ogun on behalf of the commissioner. The general manager of Oyo State Sports Council, Mr Tunde Ajibike admonished them to make the state proud and reflect te pace setters on and off the pitch. He described Oyo as a shining example of sporting excellence in the country due to the commitment, dedication, and forthrightness in athletes' management, and providing an enabling environment for talent identification and development.
He added that dedication, commitment, trust, optimism and discipline stand the athletes out as professionals across different sports while noting that Oyo is a special state among many states in Nigeria and as disciplined sportsmen and women, they need to imbibe the culture of sportsmanship to reach the high pedestal of their career.
No fewer than 320 athletes and 65 coaches and 356 officials are representing Oyo at the National Sports festival different sporting events.
