Nigeria and Nottingham Forest of England forward Taiwo Awoniyi speaks for the first time since being ruled out of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations as he reveals surgery on his leg injury 'went well'... with the former Liverpool star tipping the Super Eagles to win the title.
Awoniyi was unable to make Jose Peseiro's provisional squad for the 34th edition starting today at Ivory Coast after being unable to recover from injury in time - in a cruel blow to Nigeria.
Recall that Awoniyi suffered a groin injury while on international duty for the Super Eagles' 1-1 draw with Lesotho in Uyo last year.
Speaking to newsmen, Taiwo Awoniyi said: "No one would be happy missing the biggest tournament in Africa, it's a big tournament every player dreams to play, but that has happened. I'm pained for missing the tournament and all I could is to support my darling cpuntry."
"I keep saying it, no African countries can rub shoulders with Nigeria when it comes to players both in Africa and abroad. We have more than enough players and I'm tipping the Super Eagles to win this title once again."
Unfortunately, Nigerian football authorities last week announced that the Super Eagles will be playing this year’s Cup of Nations without their leading Bundesliga goal scorer Victor Boniface, who withdrew from the squad after a groin injury. English Premier League based player Wilfred Ndidi also withdrew from the Super Eagles squad and his club teammate Kelechi Iheanacho is struggling with injury.
Again, another Super Eagles striker, Sadiq Umar, has been ruled out and replaced by Paul Onuachu. 26-year-old Umar picked up a knee injury in Nigeria’s 2-0 friendly defeat to the Syli Stars of Guinea on Monday.
Onuachu, in 15 games for Trabzonspor this season, has nine goals and three assists.
