OYO STATE SCHOOLS CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP: NEWSPRING, B AND B SCHOOLS EMERGE CHAMPIONS

Defending Champion, Newspring Schools has retained her title at second edition of the Oyo State Schools Chess Championship that took place on Saturday, January 21, 2023 at the indoor sports hall of the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Adamasingba.
Twenty eight (28) schools and a total number of 227 students ranging from U-7 to U-17 categories participated in the one day event.
At the end of the event, champions emerged from every category and 37 medals (12 gold, 12 silver and 13 bronze medals) were distributed to the best 3 participants of each category.
Unlike the first edition that only had an overall winner, the second edition saw winners emerged at both the nursery/primary and secondary school section.
B and B International School were winners of the newly introduced nursery and primary school category, winning with with 3 medals; 1 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze ahead of Amaanah Integrated Curriculum and Gifted Education who came second with 1 gold and 1 silver while Women Improvement Society and Lead British International School were tied on third with 1 gold and 1 bronze medals each.
Newspring were overall winners of the first edition and they didn't disappoint as they galloped to another chess victory in the secondary school section with St. Brigids and Dayspring schools coming second and third respectively.
Newspring school won the exact medals they scooped at the maiden edition 2 gold, 3 silver and 5 bronze medals while St Brigids who were third last year moved a step higher by claiming 2 gold medals; the same they won last time. 
Dayspring, however, fell short of last year's performance of 6 medals (2 gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze) by winning 1 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze to finish in third place at this year's edition.
The organizers led by the chairman, Oyo State Chess Association (OYSCA), Mr Iredele Ogunbayo appreciated associate bodies incusive of the Oyo State Sports Council, The Nigeria Chess Federation, parents, schools and individuals who contributed their time and resources in the successful organizing of the event.
