Honourable Gbenga Adewusi, widely known as Arole, has been elected as the Southwest Zonal Representative on the board of the Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN). He clinched the position with a resounding 5–1 victory over his opponent, Mr. Adeyemi George of Ogun State.
The election followed a previously disrupted exercise held on September 27, 2025, at the Liberty Stadium, Ibadan, which was marred by interference from a supporter of the opposition. Consequently, the Handball Federation shifted the by-election to Abuja, where it was peacefully concluded on October 25, 2025, at the Indoor Hall of the National Sports Commission.
Adewusi’s triumph was described as a reaffirmation of his growing influence and leadership presence within the Southwest sports circle.
In his post-election address, he expressed profound gratitude to God and acknowledged the support of the immediate past HFN President, Mr. Samuel Ocheho. He also appreciated the Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde, and other Southwest state governors for their encouragement. The Deputy Governor of Osun State, His Excellency Kola Adewusi, alongside various state commissioners, sports administrators, coaches, athletes, and stakeholders, also received special mention for their steadfast support.
He further acknowledged notable contributors to sports development such as Engr. Dotun Sanusi of Ilaji Hotels & Sports Resort; Engr. Lanre Adeleke, CEO Peculiar Ultimate Concerns; and Engr. Oluwole Adebayo.
Hon. Adewusi pledged to justify the confidence reposed in him, promising to work tirelessly for the advancement of handball and sports across the region and the nation.
“The handball community can be assured of my commitment to serve with integrity, passion, and transparency. I will continue to support handball and every other sport across Nigeria,” he stated.
