Retired Nigeria FIFA referee and former Lionesses player, Folusho Ajayi Adewuyi was never afraid to speak his mind, so it's no surprise she's being open and honest in retirement as well.
The former Bishop Philips Academy player shared her thoughts with OyoSportsNews on what it takes to be a confident and sound female football referee. She revealed that female referees in Nigeria received more threats to life than the other gender.
However, Folusho, who presently work as an assistant coach at the Obafemi Awolowo University female team and Concord Football Academy was quick to point out challenges faced by referees and reasons most football fans were unruly.
"Football is not complete without the fans and supporters, they make the stadium lively, and inspired players and coaches. It also encourages sponsors because the atmosphere determines what and why they wanted to sponsor a brand."
"It is very unfortunate here in Nigeria and other part of the world that match officials are at the receiving end. Football match venues are man's environment, most female officials are being mocked, molested, completely harassed and made to feel very scared. Despite sanctions, fines, punishment made by the league body to curb unruly fans, it keeps increasing every season. As for me, the major reason I observed is that our lovely fans doesn't know or understand the law of the game. I discovered match officials decisions starting from the kick-off to the final whistle are misunderstood by the fans. They don't actually understand our signs and interpretation of the law".
The Retd FIFA badge match official and C.E.O Godswill Football Academy has also commended the League Management Company and charged them to do more by providing a secured environment for Nigeria referees at match venues in all league levels. She also advised clubs to educate, orientate and enlighten fans and supporters on how to promote and maintain peace at match venues.
