The Super Falcons of Nigeria go in search of their 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup second win when they face the Lionesses of England at the Suncorp Stadium on Monday, August 7, 2023.
It is a must-win for Head Coach Randy Waldrum tutored side if they are to progress to the round of 8 after a win over Co-hosts nation Australia and two draws against Canada and Republic of Ireland The Super Falcons came second in Group B with five points behind table topper Australia.
According to the latest FIFA Women Ranking released June 9, Nigeria were the lowest-ranked team in Group B at Number 40 and for the round of 16 clash against the Lionesses, England currently occupied 4th position.
Both teams headed into the last 16 with unbeaten in their respective groups but the Lionesses had not scored more than once in their opening two matches but came alive on a crisp night in front of 13,497 at Adelaide's Hindmarsh Stadium to seal top spot in Group D.
England boss Sarina Wiegman has no list of injuries, but Nigeria will again be without Deborah Abiodun for the third time against England. The 19-year-old had earlier missed Australia and Republic of Ireland. FIFA conducted a review of Abiodun Deborah’s red card in the match against Canada and upgraded her suspension from one to three match ban.
The match comes up on Monday, 8:30am Nigeria time.
